U.S.A.: Ocotillo

Ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens). Although it is covered with sharp thorns, the ocotillo is not a cactus. Delicate green leaves develop above the thorns following substantial rains. The ocotillo blooms in response to rainfall and red flowers 1/2 to 1 inch in length can appear on the ends of the branches at anytime of the year. Photographer - Mark Henderson.
